　　在音乐上，在某一个特定的人物出现之前与之后有着极大的分别。爵士乐在查理·帕克（Charlie Parker）出现后彻底地不同了；摇滚乐以披头士（甲壳虫乐队，The Beatles）的诞生做为明显的分界；吉米·亨德里克斯（Jimi Hendrix）让所有的乐手对电吉他就此改观，迈克·亨吉斯（Michael Hedges）也属于这一类人。他用双手的指尖轻扣指板，像弹奏电吉他般拍打琴弦，并以敲打音箱的方式制造出伴奏的打击乐；而在“Aerial Boundaries 天际”等曲目的创作中，他更混合了巴洛克风格的对位法与蓝调的滑音，其爆炸性的表现方式，无疑改变了整个世界及时代对于原音吉他的看法。
　　然而亨吉斯（Michael Hedges）并不认为自己是吉他手。比较起来，善于演奏竖琴、以瑜伽姿势吹奏长笛，并用键盘编写管弦乐曲的他倒觉得，自己只是个碰巧选择以六弦乐器来传达创作的作曲家罢了。亨吉斯（Michael Hedges）在吉他上独创的这些弹奏技巧并不是为了提高其作品的艺术鉴赏性，而是为了用单一乐器创造出最多重的声音。吉他则凑巧地成为了他的首选。“一切都是很自然的。”1990年他在一次谈话中这么说，“声音随着音乐的产生而产生，就好像我作为一个作曲家，我拥有吉他与我的双手，如果我需要制造出敲击声，那我就用手拍打它；如果我需要制造一种不一样的声响，我就用力捶打它或者想出更多方法制造更多不同的音效。”

　　在非洲人的生活中，舞蹈是不可缺少的，而舞蹈又离不开鼓。在东非的斯瓦希里语中，“鼓”和“舞”是同一个字。鼓是舞蹈的主要伴奏乐器，没有舞蹈就没有非洲生活——确实如此。非洲人白天跳，晚上也跳，有时通宵达旦地跳。他们迎宾时跳，过节时跳，祝寿时跳，结婚时跳，添丁时跳，举丧时也跳。有人说，除睡觉之外，非洲人有一半时间是在欢歌狂舞的节奏中度过的，这话虽然有点夸张，却反映了非洲人酷爱舞蹈与鼓的特点。
　　鼓有时还是民族、部落或宗教的象征，如在乌干达的国徽中就有一面鼓，它表明了一种古老的传统；鼓还可用来传递各种信息和语言，即所谓“会说话的鼓”——鼓手用不同的力度、敲击鼓面的不同部位，能发出各种不同的音响，加上急缓有别的节奏，形成各种各样的鼓点，作为一种信号语言，来传送各种信息。在清晨、傍晚比较安静的时刻，鼓声可以传到15公里以外，鼓手们一个接一个地重复着鼓声，这样可以用惊人的速度准确地传“话”——一百英里以外的的地点可以在两小时内达到。过去，当奴隶贩子捕捉黑人时，非洲人就通过鼓语通知人们迅速逃离，使奴隶贩子一无所获。鼓语还常常用来号召人民参加公益劳动、抵御敌人来犯、报告火警等。美国当代黑人作家哈里克斯的长篇小说《根》中有这样一段情节：一些失去了自由的黑人奴隶们被分开关押在几个船舱里，迫切想了解外面发生的情况，这时候只见一个黑人拿出随身携带的小鼓，在鼓面上敲出节奏，独特的鼓点夹带着清晰的语言信息顿时在船上传开了。
　　非洲人还常用鼓语来表达不便用语言表达的事物，如加纳的阿青人，丈夫习惯在舞会上用鼓语赞美自己的妻子。鼓语还可用来宣布一个人的出生、死亡和婚姻。
　　在非洲许多地方，还盛行评选鼓手一类的赛鼓集会。例如，在加纳举行的“赛鼓会”上，鼓手们分为两组擂鼓对阵。先用明快、热烈的鼓声颂扬酋长的美德、功绩，然后用徐缓、清新的鼓点叙述远古的神话、传说，接着又用急骤的鼓点宣布族内的新闻趣事。鼓声中复杂多变的节奏表达出人们各种不同的感情，时而使人悲愤填膺，时而引人开怀大笑。
　　非洲音乐以节奏明快，热情奔放见称，而非洲鼓是非洲音乐的灵魂。总之，非洲音乐中最突出、最主要的因素是节奏，鼓正是非洲音乐节奏的基础及表达音乐语言的一种最重要乐器，鼓在非洲人民生活中的重要地位是任何其他乐器无法比拟的。
