Do not worry! The insurence system in Germany is much better than USA. I do not think you need to pay the fee caused by the birth.
I am mother of two in Germany, a Chinese.I paid nothing for the birthes,as my husband buys insurence and all family members are covered by that. Please remeber Germany is a very social country. If you like you can call me in German time from 16:00 to 20:00 under telephone number:0177-2004-168. Or you can call me as you are in Germany.Sherry
1. giving birth in germany will cost 0, if you are covered by insurance. wife and all children can be covered by the husband insurance. that means when you have insurance, the insurance company will cover your wife and children automatically. but you need to fill the application form.
2. before giving birth, you and your wife are allowed to go and visit every hospital or delivery house in your city as you like, to make final decision where you wanna have your baby born.
3. before giving birth, you can get a local " Hebamma (means midwife) List" from the doctor or hospital. Then you can choose a Hebamma from the list. This professional woman will go and visit your wife and the new born in your home from the 1st week until 8 weeks after the birth to make sure your wife is fully recovered and teach your wife and you how to breasfeeding or bathing or changing diapers for the baby... the freqency of visiting can be deciding by you. this around 20 times visiting will be paid by the insurance.
4. before the birth, your wife and you can go together for delivery course which holded by the hospital or Hebamma. they will teach you two, esp your wife how to relax and push during delivery. and lots of other info. your wife's part will be paid by the insurance.
5. normally when there is nothing complicaed by the mama and the new born, your wife will be allowed to stying in the hospital around 4 to 6 days.
6. your wife can go to do " Rükenbildungskurs" (i dont know whats that in english, 中文是骨盆及产道恢复训练), in order to help your wife to get fit as before. this training usually takes 8 weeks (2 hours a week), and will also be paid by the insurance.
7. you will have for sure holidays after you baby is born. you can ask up to 3 years " parents time" to stay in home with your wife. but your company wont pay you during this 3 years, but your position is kept.
personally i think giving birth here is easier than in china, if you can have 3 weeks holiday after the birth to help your wife to cook and take care of houehold work. the Hebamma will help you two a lot in babe knowledge.
