University Duisburg-Essen invites applications for the following academic positions:
Two PhD Researchers
Salary Scale TV-L EG 13, part-time 65% starting April 1, 2018.
The position is a fixed term position until December 31, 2021.
Reference number: 70-18

The position is part of the new Collaborative Research Center 1342 “Global Dynamics of Social Policy” (SFB Globale Entwicklungsdynamiken von Sozialpolitik) at University Bremen, funded by the German Research Foundation.
“B05. Dynamics of Chinese social policy: The Interplay of national and international influences”
Project Description
The Collaborative Research Center comprises 16 projects and is divided into two sections. Projects in section A mainly rely on macro quantitative techniques to analyse and explain social policy dynamics in a global perspective. In the projects of section B, the mechanisms
that link international interdependencies and national determinants to the spread, inclusiveness, and generosity of social policy dynamics are analysed by applying qualitative case study analyses.
In project B05, led by Prof. Dr. Liu Tao and Prof. Dr. Tobias ten Brink (Jacobs University Bremen, one Post-Doc position is vacant here; starting April 1, 2018; see https://www.jacobsuniversity. de/jobs), the recent social policy expansion in China is analyzed. Even though
Chinese social policy has its own traditions, its emergence and expansion has always been highly influenced by external factors. The central question of this project is: How have internal and external influences influenced Chinese social policy and which were the most relevant
mechanisms? The project addresses developments between 1990 and 2020 and focuses on three of the most important social policy fields: pension schemes, health insurance, and unemployment insurance.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include original research and extended fieldwork in China, data collection and interpretation in the social policy fields under scrutiny, and producing publications. One PhD researcher shall overwhelmingly be engaged in the research on the pension schemes in
China, one shall be mainly engaged in the study on the health insurance systems in China.

Requirements
• Excellent M.A. Degree in public administration, sociology or political science
• In-depth knowledge of Chinese social policy and international knowledge diffusion (not mandatory)
• Expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods
• Excellent knowledge of English and Mandarin Chinese (written and spoken)
