Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)/UN Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) is for a minimum of two (2) months with the option to extend to a total of six (6) months, depending on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The desired starting date for the internship is January 2019.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
The intern shall undertake the following duties, which may include, but are not limited to:
•Contribute to the systematic elaboration, compilation and dissemination of relevant information via the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal (www.un-spider.org).
•Support remote sensing activities, especially in the area of drought monitoring and risk reduction.
•Update databases under the “Links and Resources” section on the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal.
•Support the UN-SPIDER Bonn office with tasks related to the Global Partnership Using Space-based Technology Applications for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP-STAR) and the International Network for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (IN-MHEWS).
•Contribute to the elaboration of technical documents on the use of remote sensing applications for disaster risk reduction.
•Contribute to the elaboration and upload of “Recommended Practices” to the UN-SPIDER Knowledge Portal.
•Give a presentation on his/her internship and write an internship report.
•Perform other tasks as necessary.

The United Nations Core Competencies include:

•Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.
•Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be ‘clients’ and seeks to see things from clients’s point of view.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
•OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION.

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

The following skills are desirable:
•Exposure to remote sensing and GIS software
•Familiarity with Earth observation sensors and their imaging capabilities
•Knowledge of advanced image processing and interpretation

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation or sexual abuse, or crimes other than minor traffic offences, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions.
