Backhand Footwork
0 C/ S( C6 l9 u; ?! C5 w# F. E7 G; z4 n: [! ]
Many players neglect an important part of their backhand footwork -- moving in and out. Instead of making the effort, they reach forward to the ball, or lean back to play a deep one.  h" |$ `8 S/ x7 N+ a5 g; u, P
Such footwork neglect leaves players vulnerable to the tactic of changing depths. One classic is to play a short ball followed by a deep ball, catching your opponent leaning over the table. (Often, the deep one doesn't have to be hard at all, just bounced near the end line.) Another good tactic, for points played off the table, is to alternate forceful low spins (to the backhand) with softer, higher spins. By coming up shorter, the latter shot will force the lazy opponent to reach forward and hit up at a spinny ball, often sending it off the table. You can see such errors made all day at any tournament, even among fairly high-rated players.
/ B+ v: M( Q' q6 K
4 W% L5 G6 ^) l8 N6 lThe solution to this problem involves simple hard work and paying attention, without shortcuts. After each backhand, you must try to get back to a ready position, and recognize the need to move into position for the next one. Tempting as it is just to stand there and wave your paddle quickly to counter backhands, such a lazy approach will cost you against stronger opponents who play a three-dimensional game by making a continuous effort to be in position.9 p. @.

In terms of tempo of play and general aggressiveness, most improving players err on the side of going for too much -- e.g. by trying to kill difficult balls, or by failing to fall back to steady, consistent play when warranted. But at high levels of the sport, things happen quickly in points; players open quick and hard, move fast around the court, and generally mop up the slower stuff that passes for lower-level rallies. Thus, there can come a time where a developing player needs to play a quicker, firmer game. From a practical standpoint, this is difficult advice to give, since it is so easily misinterpreted as a license to flail if you don't recognize the right time (and way) to step it up.* V1 s* C( k) B' i3 g
The best indicator is match experience against a better player, especially one at least 200 rating points stronger. Typically, they may move faster, loop sooner, counter more quickly, or even push more severely. Generally, you will have less time to get going in a point, and have to strike more severely to score. Such experience can show directly where your own movements and reactions have to accelerate.; B; g: ]# A" |% S( n

4 k4 r/ {9 [9 m! k8 o) g  UThe way you step up your game is equally important. To execute more quickly and powerfully requires better footwork and form, not harder swings. The high-rated opponent loops more quickly because he moves faster into looping position than you do. He can stroke more rapidly and consistently because he lacks the hitch in his swing (or faulty grip, bad position, etc.) that you have. But he also has a different mindset, expecting to execute these things in situations where you would have doubts. There is no question in his mind that (for example) he is going to run over there and hit that quick counter-loop. And he does.
) J! q' v( s" P/ R# |$ r6 }/ x- L- a
If you decide to step it up, first work hard in practice. Stress yourself through rapid-fire exchanges with your partner, trying to make every single shot without error. Do double-speed footwork drills. Play practice games where you must attack every ball, regardless of your opponent's shot. Try to relax a bit (no gritting of teeth), since taut muscles move more slowly. Don't forget a coach's advice (if available) on your movement and form. Then, in match play, step it up about half as much as you did in practice -- which will give you added quickness, while hopefully keeping any wildness under control.

' }/ X+ ?" u( a, [8 c% f9 o! j5 N4 U) V

0 N6 a" U9 o6 a: q6 }" G

Stepping around one's backhand to hit a forehand is a standard and useful tactic. But there's one side to it most players don't realize.
k1 [7 h7 U5 O  I3 L, }4 I5 G5 B. vWhen you step around, you make a tradeoff by giving your opponent more time in exchange for your chance to hit a more powerful shot. This occurs because forehands are hit to the side of the body, whereas backhands are hit in front -- so It takes longer for the ball to get to your forehand. This difference is most apparent in topspin rallies where balls bounce out deep.) p, w+ V" p. q6 c. w
: f/ A# H" I/ J4 Q& L9 c
What's it mean tactically? By stepping around, you also give your opponent the time she needs to step around. Similarly, when you see your opponent start to make this move, you can do the same with the extra time provided. Just knowing this creates new possibilities. For example, you might think twice about stepping around against an opponent whose forehand is stronger than yours, especially if you can hold your own in backhand rallies. Alternatively, an opponent whose first forehand loop is weak can be exploited by encouraging him to step around and open into your own, stronger forehand.7 {+ E; T* a' A6 E! o. W

U( S1 O. ?# t6 u
* O% b& ?, y& F# q

Many good pushes (i.e. spinny and low) can be hit with your backhand if you don't try for too much on the shot. Practice this by giving some pushes a quick, low flick over the net, and by adjusting your racket angle up or down to correct errors. Your objective should be consistency and placement, not power, to create what amounts to a glorified flip.
6 c- q/ w6 u- Z) V$ w/ S3 HThis simple shot can be very useful in rallies, by letting you open against pushes that might be difficult to loop. It gives you, for example, a way to initiate the attack against an opponent whose short game and opening loop are tough to crack. Done well, it results in a low, flat shot that can be awkward for your opponent to handle -- not that easy just to block, counter, or loop. With good control of this shot's direction, you can also aim at inconvenient places (e.g., your opponent's hip, or wide to the forehand) with openers hit quick off the bounce.- f6 B* m% [' `# m8 b) ^

Instead of pushing because of what you can or cannot do, push based on what your opponent can or cannot do. For example, if your opponent has an excellent loop against backspin, you should attack first whenever possible. Pushing simply helps your opponent.

Having said all this, I recommend favoring attacking whenever possible, especially in practice. Why? Because, although it won't always be the best tactic, you will improve faster as a player by doing so. The problem, of course, is that if you don't push much in practice matches, how can you perfect the shot so that you can use it in tournaments? You need to find some sort of balance here.# c2 [) d4 g( x% ]
2 U6 X! I& D; q: r
You also may not want to overdo the use of pushing as a tactic in tournaments. There's a lot more pressure on you in a tournament than in a practice match, and it's a lot easier to push under pressure than to attack. Therefore, you may need to attack more often in tournaments than good tactics would suggest, so that you can become more comfortable attacking under pressure.

( `3 C  Z* v6 u; aUsually, the player who tries to attack first in practice and tournaments becomes a stronger player than those who push more often, and don't develop as strong an attack. Many newcomers to the sport are frustrated by heavy spin serves they can't return. Here's a review of the basics for them, along with a key tip for more advanced players.
% m) U7 u4 z. C6 e8 ?* J* PWatch your opponent's paddle as it contacts the ball. Whichever way his paddle goes, your return will go also unless you adjust. For example, if he swings down, your return will go down; if he swings to your left, the ball will go that way, etc. There are two ways to adjust and return these serves safely. The first is to aim the opposite direction in which the ball would otherwise go, e.g. aim right to counteract left-aiming spin, or lift to counteract chop (down spin). The second way to adjust is to get a sense of the extent of the spin so you can also aim the ball in the direction the spin would take it, e.g. let the ball go left in response to left-aiming spin.
9 A$ i/ j* P; q
: \# C5 t. u  z' b1 OOnce they learn it, many players automatically use the first technique almost without thinking. For advanced players, however, this can be a mistake, since it makes your return predictable, giving an edge to a high-level opponent who can effectively control the location of your return by his service spin. Therefore, the second technique is often more effective since everyone is used to seeing the first one. The best approach is to learn to use them both, so you can choose between these alternatives and make your returns less predictable.

6 m% u4 u& z! S+ U

9 {0 v9 m% {4 j! v- p
By Carl Danner
6 e* r) U, Q, M) M( ?) j+ R3 J/ r+ |
To continue our review of the basics, we turn to how and where to return serves.6 u) C1 {% Z1 B2 l, s
Beginners typically learn to return serves with a simple push; it offers good control for handling many kinds of spin. The problem is that at a medium to high level (e.g., starting around 1800, and certainly at 2200 and above), this return becomes terribly weak as your opponents will loop it to death. Particularly bad is the pushed return deep to the middle of the table, which is just asking to be spanked. A spinny, low well-placed deep push can be used even at high levels, but is trickier than you think to get right.1 U+ D& L2 L0 j% C: ]- d
3 N: \- O# T) w$ d- |& d- K- G# _! p
Therefore, any player who aspires to higher-level play must practice two kinds of service returns: Either a short push that bounces twice; or a topspin, loop or flip aimed deep on the table or at an angle. Ideally, all short serves are either dropped back short or flipped, and all long serves are looped. While there are special cases and exceptions (e.g., returns against a player who will not, or cannot attack a push), as a general rule you will do very well limiting yourself only to these plays. Against top players, it can be suicide to do anything else.- T4 N4 Q: t9 T0 K, _/ O% {
, x+ f" M. Q: f
Where to aim is more complicated, and depends in part on your opponent's strengths. Generally, topspin returns should be deep on the table; in fact, deep and less spinny is usually better than shorter and more spinny. Most players are stronger either on the wings, or to their middle; go for the weaker of the two if you figure this out about an opponent. Someone who crowds the table can be vulnerable to the middle -- aim a flip at their playing elbow. Someone who retreats and spins will have more ground to cover to reach the corners. A short, low return is good against almost anyone.
/ H6 ?6 a0 m$ x0 S7 H3 }5 }) M1 x( E
Finally, always remember that you have to get it back. Nothing is worse than missing service returns. Worse comes to worse, just get it back somehow and brace yourself for the attack. That way, at least you make your opponent hit the winner to earn the point.

0 v  }8 y1 F( q3 E7 G9 `) v

Start your next practice session with some easy forehand counter-looping with your partner. Gradually, swing more and more sideways to make your shots arc more and more widely. Eventually, with a little practice, the two of you should be able to hit low, flat curving loops that are almost all sidespin. , v/ l* Z" L! k8 P; C( Z; R
In matches, the ability to vary loops in this way can be highly valuable. Many opponents can tune into (and return well) even a strong loop if its spin and trajectory are always the same. But few opponents can do the same against a loop whose shape keeps changing. It does take some time (and experience) to learn how to work such shots in effectively; for example, you should probably forget about this and just rip your best swing any time you get a set-up. In longer rallies, however, and against certain styles (e.g. flat blockers), varying the topspin/sidespin mix on your loops can pay big dividends.* F# k/ o* x8 v2 P) b3 s

Ideally, you want to position your forehand at the point of the triangle in the middle of the table on your side, and direct your attack to the two corners on your opponent's side. When you succeed at this, you force your opponent to move widely to make returns he will instinctively aim back towards the center -- and your forehand, again. Try some simple plays like this the next time you practice. Play forehand serves from your middle to either corner. Then attack the return to the opposite corner, and so on.

7 p, _) X3 p; t$ nThe weakest return for most tournament players is of a short serve to the forehand, especially one that can't easily be flipped. If you use the proper sidespin (across the ball towards their backhand, i.e. a left to right service stroke for a righty playing a righty), you can usually get a return to the middle of the table that can be attacked. This serve is challenging for the receiver because the sidespin makes it risky to go for either corner; and because few players seem to have practiced returns of short serves to the forehand, for some reason.

Some players try to avoid practice matches with either stronger or weaker opponents -- viewing them as, respectively, either out of their league, or beneath their dignity or interest. Either attitude is a mistake.
$ U$ c% [) b& b) b# M
9 ?  r9 }7 F4 C% PYou need to play stronger players to experience their capabilities first hand, to have your own weaknesses revealed, and to understand what it takes to move to the next level. Since challenging stronger opponents can also provide a no-risk ego boost, this is usually the lesser of the two problems for most players.
& O0 e( H# q, a7 x
* X* G/ G* K+ t, g# t! h7 eMore common is disdain for practice matches with lower-rated competitors, but this is an even bigger error. Consistently beating weaker players requires somewhat different skills than trying to hang in with the best. Usually, you will be forced to take the offense and win points, as opposed to the more passive activity of fending off a top player's well-tuned attack. Weaker players also cough up odd or erratic shots more often. Coping well with those can be an art that requires longer and fuller strokes than you may get time to hit against a top competitor.
9 A# ?7 w1 g( T% I( W+ p6 Y' E% P5 H! k6 C$ ^, f. D
Most importantly, those who think they're too good for weaker practice matches are often arrogant or insecure about their own games -- believing others to be beneath their own talents, or secretly afraid of losing face from an unconvincing showing against a "bad" player. Players with this attitude are prime upset fodder when tournament time comes, since a lower-rated opponent can sometimes provoke them to panic just by staying in the match. To avoid such upsets, you are much better off suffering a few such struggles at your club, first.5 j, ?  y9 Z& e# ?; ?

: B& `- F% i! X1 O
; V1 _. j$ r* C& B' ^For either participant in a mirror-image match, two things are important. First, on many shots you need to aim your angles straight ahead rather than crosscourt, especially for backhand to backhand play. So many righties forget this, and instinctively set up a left-handed forehand with a backhand counter or block. Second, you need to account for different amounts of sidespin than you are used to. Notice I said different amounts, not different spins, because a lefty's forehand has the same sidespin as a well-struck righty backhand -- just more of it. Think of it in those terms, and then adjust for the bigger ball break that comes with the extra sidespin.- E8 y) m, Y& j( a. h; F2 L
: ~, Q- B9 d. V
During points, I recommend either player (the righty, or the lefty) consider a simple approach: Defend crosscourt to the backhand, and attack crosscourt to the forehand. For service returns, hard pushes, and blocks, going crosscourt to the backhand can cramp your opponent and force them to come back crosscourt to your forehand. That's good. Alternatively, when you get the attack, there's nothing like going at your opponent's wide forehand for a point winner off either of your sides, but especially the backhand -- where you can take the ball early over the table and angle it away.( M7 h" `" Y; N% a* K! 4 q0 k6 z/ Q, i0 X( h$ ]2 a4 RNo two players, and no two penholders, play alike, but most players make the mistake of playing directly into a penholder's backhand. The problem is that the two most common strengths of penholders are their forehand attack from the backhand corner, and their quick backhand block. (Many players have stronger forehand attacks from the backhand corner because the table's not in the way, they know they can follow up with another forehand, and they won't be leaning the wrong way as they might when moving to cover the wide forehand.) Many players are afraid of a penholder's forehand, and so fall into this trap.
+ w0 r- `3 h4 R( w9 [
7 H5 u- D$ E8 yInstead, try attacking the wide forehand of a penholder first, then come back to the backhand. You'll not only find the penholder's backhand, but it won't be so quick or effective, as he won't be crowding the table as much as if you play into the backhand from the start. You have to make sure the attack is effective - if he can smash your attack consistently, then the attack is too weak. But the penholder will often have a weaker forehand here than if he were to do it from the backhand side. This doesn't mean you shouldn't play a penholder's backhand - many have trouble with this, especially against spinny loops, and if they don't step around, they might be susceptible to a strong backhand-to-backhand attack. But you can often make them even weaker if you go after the forehand first.

I always recommend a good, neutral shakehand grip that favors neither forehand or backhand. It's best for proper technique, and also allows you to block a hard loop or smash readily because your racket angle is naturally correct. You can find this grip by holding the racket only with your thumb and first finger, with the edge nestled midway between them. Add the other three fingers to the handle, and you're good to go.
: S* C1 o3 r* F2 U
( |( k# P8 y4 Y
" B3 B7 s. Y$ h- p( lIf your shakehand grip is different, should you change it? I would say so, while recognizing that the process can be more complicated than it seems. Usually, those with unorthodox grips have developed other physical compensations to permit them to hit reasonably consistent shots. For example, if your grip favors the forehand, chances are you will stand too square to the table to allow your forehand shots to go straight despite the open racket. Just changing your grip, without changing your body position, will lead to trouble. The same can also hold true for the shape of your strokes.  g9 G, y  r3 l( E# k" }. w2 ~

0 x. {0 `+ ^2 s
" F4 c& u" ~( H9 o" |Thus, if you change grips, be prepared for a learning process that can last months as you adjust (and hopefully abandon) your other compensations that permitted the ball to go straight off a crooked racket. Some slow, consistent stroke practice (with emphasis on form and footwork) can be a good learning aid to help realign all the moving parts in the right direction.

/ w# V1 f$ j/ Z9 S1 Y* t8 w  M  q
+ {$ j! A! j. |5 \4 B; k: I6 f

; F) B$ S! G' [) U8 tI find there are two good ways to learn a new stroke. First, and usually best, is to start slow and consistent, focusing on form and footwork while hitting softly enough to make virtually every ball. In this approach you pick up the power and pace only gradually, while never sacrificing consistency. Second, and sometimes best for trying something difficult, is to attempt the shot repeatedly until some version of it works. Here, you experiment to determine the best technique, and then refine the stroke to make it consistent once you understand the required elements.( w4 A( g4 Y. N
