Amazing Grace
(words: John Newton 1725 - 1807, England; music: unknown)

John Newton 出生于伦敦, 十一岁时随父亲上船过上航海生活，吃喝嫖赌, 无所不为。他以连骂两个小时脏话不带重样的而闻名. 后被父亲驱除. 宗教信仰早已放弃,并曾在运送奴隶的船上工作。直到1747年遭遇一次强烈的暴风,险些沉船,绝望中他企求神的恩典,后来化险为夷,他变成为虔诚的基督徒,但并没有立即放弃贩卖奴隶，不过几年之后他就因为更深入认识基督教的理念而改行了。最后成为牧师，从1785 年直到死反对奴隶买卖,鼓励支持好朋友威伯福士长期抗战, 大力在国会推动反奴隶买卖的者。威伯福士有一个时候虔诚到一个地步想放弃政治去传福音；纽顿说服他，让他相信他在现在的岗位上更能为神作工。
"Amazing Grace" 估计写于1762, 曲子推测是源自美国早期的民歌或是纽顿听奴隶所唱. “今日美国”杂志的问卷显示，它是全美国人最喜爱的一首诗歌。

这首诗歌事实上反映了每一位基督徒的故事──不管他或她信主时是败坏的，还是“纯真的”。唯有靠神的奇异恩典我们才能得救。
